Virgin's Bower

Clematis ligusticifolia

Ranunculaceae (Buttercup Family)

Description: This woody vine is also known as Yerba De Chiva, Old-Man's Beard, and Western White Clematis. Leaflets are irregularly lobed or toothed. Flowers are white with many prominent stamens and four petal-like sepals.

Habitat: Grows in many of the mountain ranges in the Death Valley area at elevations between 2200 to 9200 feet. Extended range includes most of the western half of North America. Found along streams or near springs.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from June to September.

Comments: Virgin Bower was sometimes called pepper vine by early pioneers since it was used as a substitute for real pepper. This is not a good idea though since the plant is considered to be toxic and will cause internal bleeding if consumed in sufficient quantities.
