Butterfly BushBuddleja utahensis Description: This shrub grows up to about two feet in height. It has grayish green leaves and small, cream-colored flowers that grow in clusters. The plant is covered with small hairs. Male and female flowers grow on separate plants. Habitat: Butterfly bush is found on slopes and prefers dolomite, volcanic rock, and limestone. It is found in the Death Valley area, Nevada, and Utah between 2500 and 4500 feet. The specimens shown on this page were found near the Big Bell Mine in the Funeral Range of Death Valley. Flowering Season: Flowers form from May to October. Comments: This plant is uncommon and isn't listed in many plant books. Interestingly there are many species in this genus that are native to Africa and Asia, but only one species is native to North America. Formerly classified as a member of the Buddlejaceae (Buddleja Family). | |
