CattailTypha domingensis Description: Cattails are tall perennial herbs sprouting up from creeping rhizomes. Flowers are unisexual, but extremely numerous and crowed onto the stalk to form the sponge-like structure we associated with the cattail. Male flowers form in the top segment and the female flowers form in the bottom segment. Habitat: Cattails grow in locations with lots of water below 5000 feet in eleation. They around found throughout warm regions of the world. Flowering Season: Flowers form during June and July. Comments: DeDecker lists three species of cattail found in the Death Valley area: The specimens shown on this page where found in the upper part of the northern branch of Water Canyon within the Argus Wilderness. |
