Typha domingensis

Typhaceae (Cattail Family)



Description: Cattails are tall perennial herbs sprouting up from creeping rhizomes. Flowers are unisexual, but extremely numerous and crowed onto the stalk to form the sponge-like structure we associated with the cattail. Male flowers form in the top segment and the female flowers form in the bottom segment.

Habitat: Cattails grow in locations with lots of water below 5000 feet in eleation. They around found throughout warm regions of the world.

Flowering Season: Flowers form during June and July.

Comments: DeDecker lists three species of cattail found in the Death Valley area:
1) Typha angustifolia Narrow-leaved cattail
2) Typha domingensis Buff cattail
3) Typha latifolia Brown cattail

The specimens shown on this page where found in the upper part of the northern branch of Water Canyon within the Argus Wilderness.
