Onagraceae (Evening Primrose Family)



Description: Also known as Elegant Clarkia, Elegant Fairyfan, and Mountain Garland, this annual herb grows to a height of up to three feet. Stems are reddish and the plants are much-branched. The flowers have four petals which are pink to reddish to purple and the individual petals are described as paddle-like, diamond-shaped, or triangular.

Habitat: This plant is endemic to California and grows at elevations below 5000 feet.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from June to September.

Comments: Native Americans used the seeds of this plant as a food source.
