CornflowerCentaurea cyanus Description: Also known as Bachelor Buttons and Knapweed, this plant grows to a height of one to three feet. The leaves are linear, somewhat hairy, and gray-green in color. Flowers are blue most of the time, although they may be purple, pink, or white. Habitat: Although native to Western Asia and Europe, this plant has naturalized widely all around the planet. Generally speaking, it's an escaped cultivar adapted to many different climates and conditions. Flowering Season: Flowers form from May through August. Comments: The petals of this plant are sometimes used as a garnish for salads, drinks, and desserts. The flower head and leaves are said to be high in quercetin and apigenin. |
