Scented Cryptantha

Cryptantha utahensis

Boraginaceae (Borage Family)



Description: This small annual is also known as scented forget-me-not or Utah cryptantha. It is a low growing plant between four and ten inches in height. It has small little white flowers which grow in clusters. The center or throat of the flowers is often yellow. The leaves and stems often have little hairs.

Habitat: Scented cryptantha is found throughout the desert southwest below 6000 feet.

Flowering Season: Flowers are evident between March and May.

Comments: There are many species of cryptantha which grow in the Death Valley area including C. nevadensis, C. muricata, C. inaequata, C. circumscissa, and many others. In fact, Jepsen et. al. lists thrity-six species which are found in the California deserts, and Munz lists fifty-nine species which are found throughout the state.
