Cornus sericea

Cornaceae (Dogwood Family)



Description: Also known as American Dogwood and Red Osier Dogwood, this shrub grows to a mature height of between three and fifteen feet. Branches and twigs are dark red. Leaves are oblong and dark green on top and glaucous below. The small flowers form in clusters and are dull white. The fruit is a white berry.

Habitat: This plant grows throughout much of North America from Alaska to Mexico and from California to Virginia at elevations up to 9200 feet, usually near streams or other water sources.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from May to August.

Comments: This plant often forms dense thickets as a result of its ability to spread through the use of stolons and may sometimes be listed as C stolonifera.
