Papaveraceae (Poppy Family)



Description: Also known as Yellow Fire Heart, this perennial herb grows to a mature height of two to six feet. Leaves are blue-green to gray-green, finely dissected, fern-like, and up to a foot long. Flowers are yellow and oddly shaped, described variously as resembling a heart, steer's head, or fleur-de-lis. Seed pods are tapered and about an inch long.

Habitat: This plant is found throughout much of central and southern California and south into Baja California at elevations up to 7500 feet. It is often found on bushy slopes, burned areas, gullies, and disturbed sites. Grows in Yellow Pine Forest, Foothill Woodland, and Chaparral plant communities.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from April to September.

Comments: Until recently this plant was listed as Dicentra chrysantha. It may also be listed as a member of the Fumariaceae. The seeds will not germinate unless exposed to fire.
