Zygophyllaceae (Caltrop Family)



Description: Also known as California Fagonbush this small perennial subshrub forms mounds of up to eighteen inches in height. Stems are often succulent and leaves are waxy. Additionally, leaves are dark green, narrow, and composed of three leaflets. Flowers are purple or lavender with five petals and may be described as star-shaped.

Habitat: This plant is found throughout much of the desert southwest. It tends to grow on hot, dry slopes at elevations below 4000 feet.

Flowering Season: Flowers form during March, April, and May.

Comments: Although potenially useful as a landscape plant, this plant is rarely available in nurseries.
