Gravel-Ghost

Atrichoseris platyphylla

Asteraceae (Sunflower Family)

Description: This annual is also sometimes called parachute plant and tobacco weed. Its thick leaves lie flat on the ground and form a basal rosette around the base of a long stalk from which small white flowers form. These stalks can be as high as two and a half and sometimes three feet tall.

Habitat: Gravel ghost can be found in low washes and rocky slopes throughout western desert areas.

Flowering Season: Gravel ghosts are in bloom between March and May.

Comments: The leaves of this plant are somewhat reminiscent of small tobacco leaves in color and shape, hence the alternate name, tobacco weed. The sunflower family was at one time known by the scientific name Compositae.
