Layne Milkvetch

Astragalus layneae

Fabaceae (Pea Family)



Description: Layne Milkvetch is also known as Layne Locoweed or Layne's Rattle-Weed. This perennial grows to a height of a little over a foot. The leaves are grayish-green with eleven to twenty-three leaflets. Flowers are purple and white. Seed pods are crescent-shaped and often covered with large brown splotches.

Habitat: Layne Milkvetch is found in sandy places such as washes below 5000 feet throughout the desert southwest.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from March to June.

Comments: DeDecker lists twenty-four different species of Astragalus that grow in the Death Valley area. Some of these species have additional sub-species!
