Parry's Linanthus

Linanthus parryae

Polemoniaceae (Phlox Family)

Description:This annual herb is also known as Sandblossoms. It is a tiny plant that grows to a mature height of one to four inches. The leaves are linear and hairy. The flowers may be white or light blue and they are funnel-shaped and about a half inch wide. Sandblossoms are dependent on the melyrid beetle for pollination. Seeds may be dormant for several years and germinate only when necessary conditions are met.

Habitat: Sandblossoms are native to and endemic to California. They grow at elevations between 1500 feet and 6400 feet in sandy, open areas of the Mojave Desert and surrounding mountains.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from March to May.

Comments: Sandblossoms have been studied for decades by several geneticists and botanists. More specifically, the genetics underlying the frequency of blue and white flowers has been examined in great detail.
