Newberry Milkvetch

Astragalus newberryi

Fabaceae (Pea Family)

Description: This low-growing perennial has leaves that are divided into three to thirteen leaflets. The flowers are pink to purple and look like the usual pea family type of flower. The flowers are produced on short stalks and the seedpods are quite furry.

Habitat: Newberry Milkvetch grows at elevations between 4400 to 9500 feet in the eastern Mojave Desert. DeDecker notes that it prefers limestone soils.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from April to June.

Comments: MacKay notes that Newberry Milkvetch is quite likely to host seed beetles, which make tiny holes in the seedpods.
