Oleaceae (Olive Family)



Description: Also known as Stretchberry, Tanglewood, and Devil's Elbow, this shrub often forms thickets near springs or along mountain creeks. It is a shrub or small tree usually between six and ten feet in height. The bark is often grayish and the twigs may be short and spine-like. The fruit is purple to black.

Habitat: Desert Olive grows in washes and canyons below 6000 feet in elevation throughout the desert southwest.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from March through April.

Comments: The specimens shown on this page were photographed in south fork of Wood Canyon in the Argus Range in August of 2007 at an altitude of 4200 feet.
