Scrophulariaceae (Figwort Family)



Description: Also called Dwarf Alpine Indian Paintbrush, this perennial herb may reach a height of about eight inches, although it often remains much shorter. The flowers range in color from pink to purple to salmon to yellow and are often grayish.

Habitat: Found on rocky slopes throughout the Great Basin as well as the Sierra Nevada range at elevations between 6400 and 13000 feet.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from June through August.

Comments: Members of the genus Castilleja are extremely variable, being subject to hybridization and genetic abnormalities. Recently reclassified as member of Orobanchaceae (Broomrape Family).
