Bog LupineLupinus polyphyllus Description: Also known as Bigleaf Lupine, Broad-Leaf Lupine, Meadow Lupine, and Blue Lupine, this perennial herb grows to a mature height of up to five feet, although it is most often between two and four feet tall. The leaves are large and composed of five to seventeen broad leaflets. The flowers are produced in a tall spike and range in color from blue to purple, but sometimes may be pink, red, or white. Seed pods are typical of those produced by other members of the pea family. Habitat: This plant is native to most of western North America from California to Alaska and east to Wyoming. It usually occurs in wetlands below 10,000 feet in elevation. Flowering Season: Flowers form from May through July. Comments: This plant has become an invasive weed throughout northeastern North America. It has also become a problem in New Zealand and parts of Europe. |
