Potamogetonaceae (Pondweed Family)



Description: This aquatic perennial herb grows in lakes, ponds, and streams. It consists of branching stems which are up to two and a half feet long and which generally form a dense mat just beneath the surface of the water. Leaves are linear, narrow, and up to about two and a half inches long. Flower clusters are tiny and spherical to short-cylindrical in shape. Fruits are pale green to olive-green or brown.

Habitat: Leafy Pondweed is an aquatic plant found throughout North America. It grows at elevations up to 8600 feet.

Flowering Season: Flowers form during March and June, possibly into the summer at higher elevations.

Comments: The Pondweed Family (Potamogetonaceae) includes approximately 120 species of aquatic plants.
