Santolina Pincushion

Chaenactis santolinoides

Asteraceae (Sunflower Family)

Description: This perennial herb grows in clumps or mats which can be up to ten inches high. The leaves are arranged in a basal rosette and are best described as lobed, hairy, and somewhat cylindrical. Flowers are white to pink and form at the top of an erect stem. Fruits are achenes or cypselae.

Habitat: This plant is found only in California, including the southern Sierra Nevadas, San Gabriels, San Bernardinos, and Mt. Pinos. It grows in Yellow Pine and Red Fir plant communities at elevations between 4500 to 8000 feet.

Flowering Season: Flowers form during June and July.

Comments: Given the elevation range, it would seem likely that this plant would also be found in Pinyon/Juniper Woodland plant communities.
