Rosa woodsii

Rosaceae (Rose Family)



Description: Shrub three to nine feet in height. Many thorns with pink flowers. Fruit red with many seeds beneath thin layer of fleshy hip.

Habitat: Found between 3000 and 9000 feet throughout the desert southwest.

Flowering Season: Blooms from May through July.

Comments: Several varieties found in the southwestern deserts including ultramontana, gratissima, and glabrata. The one most likely to be found in the Death Valley area is Rosa woodsii gratissima although DeDecker states that "it is possible that some populations may be var. ultramontana."
